What to expect

Libraries are the best free place to work in almost every city. Reading rooms are silent, seats come with outlets and the Wi-Fi is usually fine for email and documents, if not always for large uploads. Some ask you to register for a free card or a guest pass at the desk.

Silence is the rule, so calls are out: look for a phone booth or step outside. Seats near windows go first, and opening hours vary a lot, with many libraries closed on Sundays or opening late on Mondays.
